A landscape designer with almost three decades of experience seeing what works beyond the drawing board.
I have spent most of my professional life working in the landscape industry.
Over those years, I have been involved with the many pieces that ultimately determine whether a project succeeds: design, plants, irrigation, materials, installation, maintenance, budgeting, and the practical decisions that happen between an initial idea and a completed landscape.
That experience changed the way I think about design.
I know that something can look beautiful on paper but create problems when it reaches the field.
I know that a plant choice affects much more than appearance.
I know that materials need to be considered in terms of installation, durability, cost, and how they will age.
I know that budgets matter. Access matters. Maintenance matters. Water matters.
And the earlier those realities are considered, the more confidently a project can move forward.
I created Landscapes by Carmen so I could bring that broad industry background into a more focused and personal design service.
I wanted homeowners to be able to slow the process down at the right stage. To think first.
To understand their property. To explore the possibilities.
To make informed decisions before committing significant time and money to installation. My role is not to simply prepare a drawing and leave you to figure out what happens next.
I help develop the design, organize the decisions, prepare the project for implementation, and remain available when continued design guidance is useful.
Some clients arrive with folders full of inspiration.
Some know exactly what is wrong but cannot yet picture the solution. Others need help determining where to begin.
The property may require a complete redesign or simply a better planting plan, a more functional backyard, a stronger entry, or resolution of one difficult area.
My job is to understand what you need and determine the right level of design for the project.
My field experience means I am always thinking one step beyond the design itself.
Can this be installed sensibly?
Does it suit the site?
How will the plants develop?
What maintenance will it require?
Does the material make sense?
Is the design aligned with the client’s priorities and budget?
These questions do not limit creativity.
They help turn a creative idea into a landscape that can actually succeed.
I can also remain involved during implementation to help communicate the design intent and provide continuity between the plans and the finished landscape.
